When arm numbness is an emergency
- Stroke: sudden numbness or weakness of the arm, face drooping, slurred speech. Remember FAST: Face, Arms, Speech, Time to call emergency services.
- Heart attack: chest pain or pressure spreading to the arm (often the left), jaw or back, with breathlessness, sweating or nausea.
- Severe injury: after trauma to the neck.
Call emergency services immediately in these situations.
Pressure and sleeping position
Sleeping on your arm, with arms overhead or with bent elbows can compress nerves temporarily, causing numbness that settles once you move.
Trapped nerve in the neck
A disc or bony narrowing in the neck can irritate a nerve root, causing pain, tingling and numbness along a strip of the arm into specific fingers, sometimes with weakness. Neck pain may or may not be present. Most cases improve over weeks to months.
See disc prolapse in neck, pinched nerve in shoulder and neck arthritis.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Compression of the median nerve at the wrist causes tingling in the thumb, index and middle fingers, worse at night and with gripping.
Ulnar nerve entrapment
Compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow causes tingling in the ring and little fingers, worse with the elbow bent.
Thoracic outlet syndrome
Compression of nerves or blood vessels between the neck and armpit can cause tingling, aching and weakness, often worse with arms overhead. It is more common in people with poor posture, extra ribs or certain sports.
Generalised causes
- Peripheral neuropathy, often from diabetes.
- Vitamin B12 deficiency.
- Underactive thyroid.
- Multiple sclerosis.
- Anxiety and over-breathing, which can cause tingling in both hands and around the mouth.
See anxiety symptoms.
Right arm vs left arm numbness
Nerve causes can affect either arm. Left arm symptoms are more often associated with heart problems in public awareness, but heart attack pain can spread to either arm. Stroke affects the side of the body opposite to the affected side of the brain. The pattern and accompanying symptoms matter more than which side is affected.
How the cause is found
- Examination of sensation, strength and reflexes.
- Blood tests: glucose, B12, thyroid.
- Nerve conduction studies and EMG.
- MRI of the neck if a nerve root problem is suspected.
- ECG and heart tests if a heart cause is possible.
See nerve entrapment.
Treatment
- Change sleeping and working positions.
- Splints for carpal or cubital tunnel syndrome.
- Physiotherapy, neck exercises and nerve glides.
- Painkillers and nerve pain medicines.
- Treating underlying causes such as B12 deficiency.
- Injections or surgery for severe or persistent compression.
See nerve glides.
What you can do
- Avoid sleeping on your arm or with arms overhead.
- Take breaks from leaning on elbows or bending wrists.
- Keep a neutral neck posture at screens.
- Stay active and do gentle neck mobility exercises.
Desk and phone habits
Long hours with the head forward over a phone or laptop strain the neck and can irritate nerve roots. Raising screens to eye level, using a headset, keeping elbows supported and taking movement breaks every 30 minutes reduce symptoms.
See forward head posture.
When to seek urgent help
- Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side.
- Facial droop, slurred speech or confusion.
- Chest pain, breathlessness or sweating.
- Numbness after a neck injury.
- Weakness that is getting worse.
- Numbness in both arms and legs, or bladder or bowel changes.
Key points to remember
- Most arm numbness comes from pressure or a trapped nerve.
- The fingers affected help identify the nerve involved.
- Sudden one-sided numbness may be a stroke.
- Arm symptoms with chest pain may be a heart attack.
Questions about arm numbness
These answers are general information and do not replace an examination or individual medical advice.
What causes numbness in the right arm?
Commonly a trapped nerve in the neck, elbow or wrist, or sleeping position.
Is left arm numbness a sign of a heart attack?
It can be if it comes with chest pain, breathlessness or sweating.
When is arm numbness a stroke?
When it is sudden, one-sided and comes with facial droop or speech problems.
Why do my arms go numb at night?
Sleeping position compressing nerves, or carpal tunnel syndrome.
Can anxiety cause arm numbness?
Yes, especially with over-breathing, often in both hands.
Can a neck problem cause arm numbness?
Yes, a trapped nerve root can cause numbness down the arm.
Can B12 deficiency cause arm tingling?
Yes, it can damage nerves.
How long does a trapped nerve in the neck last?
Many improve within weeks to a few months.
Should I see a doctor for tingling in my hand?
Yes, if it is persistent, recurring or comes with weakness.
Can sleeping on my arm cause lasting damage?
Rarely; prolonged pressure can occasionally cause temporary nerve palsy.
