You’ve been asked to have a test and aren’t quite sure why.

Tingling, loss of strength, hands going numb or a referral with a name that means nothing to you. It is normal to arrive with questions: that is why we explain it.

You don’t need to know which test is yours: tell us what you’ve been asked for and we will guide you.

See what we test

The tests, explained without jargon.

Each test answers a specific clinical question. We tell you what people tend to notice, what we test and what the result is for.

01

Electromyography and nerve conduction

What you notice

  • “I’ve lost strength and don’t know why”
  • “I feel tingling or numb areas”
  • “I’ve been asked to have an EMG”

What we test

  • The electrical activity of your muscles, at rest and when contracting.
  • How the signal travels along the nerves: speed and strength.
  • Only the nerves and muscles related to your symptoms.
With Dr. Taramundi
02

Carpal tunnel and trapped nerves

What you notice

  • “My hands go numb at night”
  • “I keep dropping things”
  • “My fingers tingle”

What we test

  • Whether a nerve is compressed and where.
  • How much it is affecting the nerve’s conduction.
  • A report that helps your doctor or orthopaedic surgeon decide on treatment.
03

Sciatica and pain running down the arm

What you notice

  • “The pain runs down my leg”
  • “I feel tingling running down my arm”
  • “The MRI showed a herniated disc”

What we test

  • Whether a nerve root is affected and at what level.
  • How the muscle supplied by that root responds.
  • Information that complements the MRI.
04

Polyneuropathies and neuromuscular diseases

What you notice

  • “My feet feel numb”
  • “I get tired and lose strength”
  • “I have diabetes and my feet feel strange”

What we test

  • How several nerves are working at once.
  • Whether the cause lies in the nerve or in the muscle itself.
  • Follow-up of a condition already diagnosed.

If you have sudden weakness, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a rapid deterioration, seek urgent care: don’t wait for a scheduled test.

05

Evoked potentials and dizziness

What you notice

  • “I’ve been asked to have evoked potentials”
  • “I get dizzy and they want to test my balance”
  • “They want to check the visual or auditory pathway”

What we test

  • The visual (VEP), auditory (BAEP) and somatosensory (SEP) pathways.
  • The motor pathway, with magnetic stimulation.
  • The vestibular system, with vestibular evoked myogenic potentials.
06

Vocal cord paralysis and voice

What you notice

  • “I have a paralysed vocal cord”
  • “My voice trembles”
  • “The ENT doctor has asked for a laryngeal EMG”

What we test

  • The activity of the laryngeal muscles.
  • Information to guide treatment and prognosis.
  • Coordinated with ENT in the same visit, when needed.

What an EMG is like.

It is done in clinic, as an outpatient. How long it takes depends on how many nerves and muscles need testing; we give you an estimate when booking.

  1. 1

    History and examination

We review your symptoms and history to decide which nerves and muscles are worth testing.

  2. 2

    Signals on the skin

With electrodes and brief stimuli we measure how the signal travels along the nerve. It feels like a small pulse.

  3. 3

    Muscle activity

If indicated, a fine needle records the activity of specific muscles. It may be uncomfortable for a moment.

  4. 4

    We explain what we saw

What was tested, what it means for your case and the next step with your doctor.

Before you come

“Tell us if something is very uncomfortable or if you need a break: we adjust the pace with you.”

Your medication

Tell us about all your medication, especially anticoagulants. Don’t stop any treatment on your own.

Devices

Tell us if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted device.

Skin and clothing

Come with clean skin, no creams, and loose clothing that lets us uncover the area.

IMQ, Lagun Aro or private.

When booking, tell us your insurer and which test you’ve been referred for. We will confirm how it is handled before you come.

Neurophysiology tests with your IMQ policy.

Care with your Lagun Aro insurance.

A one-off test vs a test that makes sense.

A result is never interpreted in isolation: it is combined with your history, your examination and your symptoms.

A one-off test

A number without context

  • The same nerves are tested in everyone.
  • The result arrives without explanation.
  • You don’t know what it means for your case or what comes next.

A test that answers a question

  • Techniques are chosen according to your symptoms and examination.
  • We explain what was tested and what it means.
  • Coordination with ENT, Speech Therapy or Physiotherapy when it helps.

«Un encanto y muy profesional. Me explicó todo detalladamente y con mucho tacto la prueba, que era dolorosilla de por sí. Vamos, que un 10. Gracias por todo, Silvia.»

Questions before the test.

If you have sudden weakness, difficulty breathing or swallowing, confusion or a rapid deterioration, seek urgent care (112). Don’t wait for a scheduled test.

Do you work with my insurance?

We work with IMQ and Lagun Aro, and privately too. When booking, tell us your insurer and we will confirm how it is handled.

Does an EMG hurt?

Nerve conduction stimuli feel like small pulses or tingling. The needle part may cause brief discomfort, like a prick. If you need a break, tell us.

Do I need to stop my medication?

Don’t stop it on your own. Tell us about all your medication, including anticoagulants and antiplatelets, and follow the instructions we give you.

Are EMG and electromyography the same thing?

In everyday language, yes. The appointment may include needle electromyography, nerve conduction or both, depending on what needs testing.

Can I go about my normal day afterwards?

Usually yes. The tested area may be a little sensitive or have a small bruise.

What should I bring?

The referral or test request, previous reports, your medication list and any details about when your symptoms began.
